Organic traffic is every visit to your website that comes from a click on a search result in Google (or Bing, DuckDuckGo). Paid ads don't count; we call those 'paid traffic'. Organic traffic is the holy grail of SEO: it doesn't cost a cent per click, and it keeps growing.
How does your traffic compare?
For small business sites, these are rough monthly benchmarks:
- 0-100 visitors: very few. SEO is barely active yet.
- 100-500 visitors: the basics. Some organic visibility.
- 500-2000 visitors: average to good for a local small business.
- 2000-10,000 visitors: strong. Regional or national visibility.
- 10,000+ visitors: top tier. An authority in your industry.
Why is organic traffic so valuable?
- No cost per click. Google Ads costs you 1-5 euros per click. Organic is free.
- Compound growth. Every page you publish can bring in traffic for years.
- Higher conversion. People who find you organically are usually searching more purposefully than people who click an ad.
- Trust. Ranking at the top of Google (organically) gives you more authority than an ad next to the results.
What determines how much organic traffic you get?
- The number of keywords you rank for
- Your position in the search results: position 1 gets 30% of the clicks, position 10 just 2-3%
- The search volume of those keywords: 100 keywords with 10 searches a month each = 1,000 searches you can score on
- The click chance on your result: your meta title and description determine what percentage of searchers actually click
How do you increase organic traffic?
Three main strategies, in order of impact:
- Publish content. Every page is a new door for visitors. 1 blog post a week = 52 new doors a year.
- Link building. More authority means your existing pages rank better for the keywords they already target.
- Optimize existing content. Giving pages in positions 11-20 a small push into the top 10 pays off a lot.
Measure it with Google Analytics + Search Console
Google Analytics shows how much organic traffic you get per month. Google Search Console shows exactly which search queries you rank for and where your top 10 opportunities are. Both are free and essential for any serious SEO effort.
